Posted on May 5, 2010Temescal Valley Fair: May 21st – the Youth Advisory Council will be volunteering at the annual fair in Temescal Valley. Members will be assisting set-up and running booths.
Sixth Annual “Path to Success”: May 7th – In 2005, the 1st District Youth Advisory Council adopted the mission to “guide and motivate youth about higher education.” In spring 2006, the YAC launched the Path to Success Tour. More than 260 students have benefited since its initiation. This outstanding daylong event for 8th grade and 9th grade students will illuminate the importance of higher education and spotlight the benefits of early college preparation. Participants will tour the beautiful UC Riverside and Riverside Community College campuses, eat lunch at a UCR dormitory and hear inspirational messages from college counselors and high school students throughout the day.

Mead Valley Community Clean-Up: April 30th – council members will be assisting residents dropping off waste such as tires, e-waste and metal at Tomas Rivera Middle School. In addition, members will be making certain that hazardous materials are not left.
Earth Day Clean-up & Tree Planting: April 23rd – council members will be beautifying Coral Canyon Park. In addition to picking up trash, YAC members will also be planting 15 additional trees to promote better air quality within the neighboring community.

Adopt-A-Trail Clean-Up at Cajalco Springs: Marc19th – council members will be assisting to beautify the Supervisor’s trail at Cajalco Springs. Tasks include collecting and properly discarding litter, filling ditches and making the trail easier to walk or bike on. The clean-up will last from 8:00AM-12:00PM. For a waiver, please click CLEAN.
Youth Summit: March 3rd – the objective of the event is to create an avenue where Riverside County youth can discuss issues that affect their lives and community. Each year a theme is selected to discuss at the summit based on feedback from previous participants. This year’s theme is continuing education and has been titled, “Passport to your Future.”
This year’s workshops will be presented on the following topics: Financial Aid and Scholarships, The admissions process for schools including the University of California Campuses, California State University Campuses, and community colleges and How to prepare for college in high school. Fund-raiser at Mimi’s Cafe: February 26th – In an effort to off-set the costs of the Youth Commission’s 11th Annual Youth Summit, it will be hosting a fund-raiser from 7:00AM-10:ooPM at Mimi’s Cafe in Moreno Valley. 15% of proceeds will go to the Youth Commission if you click and print the flier under “Good Eats.”
Valentine’s Day Project at Sunrise Assisted Living: February 12th – Sunrise Senior Living Assisted Living focuses on individual wellness, and encourages continued independence with a tailored plan of assistance provided by well-trained team members, available 24-hours a day. Members from the council will volunteer at the center to interact with the seniors in an effort to share the joy and love of the season. Click Valentine for more information.
Charles Dickens Festival: January 22nd – the purpose of the event is to enhance a sense of community among citizens of Riverside County and Southern California by creating a series of literary events and to provide educational, family-oriented, literary entertainment and activities such as plays, musical performances, pageants, living history presentations, workshops, lectures, classroom study, exhibits and a street bazaar with free entertainment, vendors and costumed characters. The YAC will be assisting with arts and crafts. The event will be hosted at the Riverside Convention Center. More information can be found by clicking Dickens.
Potluck with Operation SafeHouse: January 13th –The SafeHouse provides emergency shelter, intervention and outreach services to runaway, homeless and other youth in crisis. During this event, council members share food and interact with the teenagers that are staying at the shelter.
Collecting food items for “Harvest for HOPE”: December 20th – 546 items were collected from various drop-off locations throughout Riverside, Lake Elsinore and Wildomar. The items were delivered to HOPE as well. The volunteers were very touched by the council members’ hard work and generosity.
“Breakfast with Santa”: December 11th – this holiday event welcomes Mead Valley residents and their families to come together, share breakfast, and take a picture with Santa Claus. Children will each receive a gift and will be able to make fun arts and crafts with Youth Advisory Council members. Please click Santa for event details or Claus for local news coverage.
“Clean $” Clean-Up: December 4th – In an effort to keep Temescal Valley and El Cerrito clean, Code Enforcement has invited all local, youth-based, nonprofit organizations and clubs to earn money and help the environment. $500 will be rewarded to the Youth Advisory Council for each of the two clean-ups; the funds will be donated to a local non-profit within First District. The non-profits have yet to be selected.
Christmas Tree Lane Project: November 29th – the YAC will be organizing an exhibit of a little girl’s room and two Christmas trees at the Lake Elsinore Outlet. This exhibit will be auctioned in December along with other rooms. All proceeds will go directly to youth programs such as the Girls and Boys Club and the Student of the Month Program of Lake Elsinore. YAC members will also come up with the name and theme of this room. All of the items and decorations for this room will be provided. Taking Action for HOPE: November 20th – the Youth Advisory Council will be collecting items at the Albertsons in Lake Elsinore located at 30901 Riverside Drive on Saturday, November 20th from 10:30AM to 2:30PM to help fill the cupboards at the Help Our People of Elsinore (HOPE) food bank. “Stuff the Bus”: November 18th – Each year, Operation SafeHouse shelters more than 600 teens in need of a safe place to stay. The house provides emergency shelter, intervention and outreach services to youth in crisis. By providing a warm caring environment, youth can address their problems and are offered positive alternatives to becoming victims of the streets. Like many other nonprofits, the organization has been facing decreases in donations and grants while needs are increasing. In response, SafeHouse and Riverside Transit Agency, a partner agency, brainstormed ways to meet those needs. RTA suggested to “Stuff the Bus;” this event drives buses around downtown Riverside to gather donations of pillows, blankets, bathroom tissue, paper towels, toothbrushes, cleaning supplies and food. 431 items were collected. “Dog Wash” at the Animal Shelter off of Van Buren: November 6th – 1st District Council members will volunteer between 10:00AM and 2:30PM washing the dogs at the shelter. Only small dogs will be washed.
“Harvest for HOPE”: November 5th – December 16th – 1st District Council members will be holding a Canned Food Drive to help fill the cupboards at the Help Our People of Elsinore (HOPE) food bank. Last year the 1st District YAC collected almost 500 non-perishable food items to contribute to HOPE. This year, the YAC hopes to surpass 500 non-perishable food items. “Celebration of Children”: October 25th – 1st District Council members will donate books raised through a drive to the Riverside County Volunteer Center’s for their “Celebration of Children” event. 391 books were donated.
Youth in Government Day: October 20th – The youth will engage in their 12th Annual Youth in Government Day. Council members will shadow a Riverside County employee throughout the day to learn and understand the importance of County, or local, government inter-workings. YAC members in the past have expressed the educational significance of this event.
Second Harvest Food Bank: October 16th – The Council will volunteer their services at Second Harvest. Tasks include stocking the kitchen, cleaning and organizing inventory.
Mead Valley Health & Safety Fair: October 2nd – The Council will volunteer their services at the Mead Valley Fair. This event aims to raise health awareness. It will also provide more information on voter registration, a graffiti clean-up program and environmental awareness. YAC members will also help volunteers set up booths.
Santa Ana Water-Shed Clean-Up: October 2nd – The Council members will be assisting collect water and reusable bag donations.
Book Drive: September 14th – October 15th – the 1st District Youth Advisory Council will be hosting a book-drive to collect new children’s books to give out at Riverside County Volunteer Center’s “Celebration of Children” event held in Riverside. Donation boxes will be placed at the following 1st District libraries: Lake Elsinore County Library, Lakeside County Library, Mission Trail County Library, and Wood Crest County Library. Boxes will also be found at First District’s office in Wildomar and Mead Valley’s Community Center, and council members will be placing boxes at schools and at parents’ job-sites. Further, council members will be passing around fliers in order to generate more donations. In 2009, 558 books were collected from throughout First District. This year, 391 books were collected.
“Stuff the Bus” Scavenger Hunt: August 28th – the Youth Advisory Council will ask First District Residents to donate items for Operation SafeHouse. The SafeHouse provides emergency shelter, intervention and outreach services to runaway, homeless and other youth in crisis. Items being collected include sponges, napkins, toilet paper, deodorant, toothbrushes, silverware sets etc. Refer to the “Stuff the Bus” flier for more details. 431 items were collected.
